Chicago native Jennifer Beals heats up our February cover. She just returned to the airwaves for the sixth and final season of Showtime’s The L Word. A glittering photo shoot and an in-depth interview make this issue a must-read. Beals opens up about her Chicago roots, campaigning for Barack Obama, and how she gears up for those infamous love scenes.

More than 400 partygoers braved a blizzard December 16 to attend the Michigan Avenue Holiday Celebration hosted by rapper and actor Chris “Ludacris” Bridges. The Chicago-born Bridges didn’t let snow, sleet, or a four-hour ride from the airport keep him from dancing with our staff until the club closed at 2 a.m. Special thanks to Manor, ORZEL Vodka, Sapporo Beer, Don Julio, NUVO, and FIJI Water for partnering with us to celebrate the holidays.

I have a long-standing deal with my husband: If he’s buying me a gift, he better make it jewelry (like so many women, I buy other things for myself all the time – but I draw the line at diamonds). Even so, I have a few favorite treats that would make any woman swoon for Valentine’s Day – so, guys, here are some ideas you might want to consider. (And ladies, if he doesn’t come through, you can always buy them for yourself.)

1. Just say spaaaahhh…and book a night in a Spa Suite at the Trump Hotel. Nestled on the 14th floor, there are a few dozen outrageously luxurious rooms connected to the spa. In-room treatments, a giant soaking tub, a spectacular view of the Chicago River – need I say more? $475, The Spa at Trump, 401 N. Wabash Avenue.

2. Nobody does date-night clothes as well as Nanette Lepore, whose entire collection is dedicated to making women feel pretty. I like this corset hidden under a tuxedo jacket – at least until after dinner. $360, Saks Fifth Avenue, 700 N. Michigan Avenue.

3. Like many of you, I was a very bad girl for the holidays, eating so many indulgent meals and skipping workouts – and, sadly, it shows. Come Valentine’s Day, I’ll be ready to break my New Year’s diet, but those calories better be worth it. My pick is Terry’s Toffee in Lavenilla (a mix of lavender and vanilla covered in chocolate) $29.99 per pound, Terry’s Toffee, 1117 W. Grand Avenue.

4. There’s nothing like getting a gift in that little blue box – and this holds true even when the gift inside is simply a porcelain blue box. This jewelry box is the perfect way to store your favorite gems from Tiffany & Co. – and it looks lovely on top of your bedroom nightstand. $75, Tiffany & Co, 730 N. Michigan Avenue.

5. Last year one of my girlfriends gave me the most gorgeous silk and lace nightie from La Perla for my trousseau – and whenever I put it on at bedtime, I feel like I should be walking a red carpet. It is simply the most beautiful thing I’ve ever owned. $452, La Perla, 535 N. Michigan Avenue.

Speaking of love, people often ask how I met my husband, WGN-TV's Tom Negovan. We were originally introduced on a radio show, and then one week later we both happened to be at the same party: Tickled Pink, a fund-raiser for breast cancer that's held each February. So we're honored to return to the event two years later as the evening's emcees. And who knows? if you're one of the 700-plus guests at this all-pink affair, you might find love, too! It's coming up on Friday, Feb. 20 at Underground (56 West Illinois). Details and tickets are at www.tickledpinkchicago.com.
